The MSc aims to educate new bio-scientists in the development and application of cutting-edge biotechnological methods and tools for environmental management and protection, as well as for monitoring food quality along the food chain, from food production to consumption and the effects of nutrition on metabolism. Research is a fundamental component of the MSc, as evidenced by the publication of over 80 scientific papers by our postgraduate students from the academic year 2006/7 to the present.
In this context, the curriculum of the study program includes courses in the axes of NUTRITION and ENVIRONMENT:
- Food and Environmental Microbiology
- Food and Environmental Toxicology
- Nutrition – Antioxidant Foods – Nutrigenomics
- Food Biochemistry
- Food Technology
- Quality Assurance
which are mainly taught by the Academic Teaching Staff of the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology. Academic staff from other departments of the University of Thessaly (Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Department of Physical Education and Sport Science) and external collaborators from the private sector (EVETAM) contribute their knowledge to the Quality Assurance course.
Graduates of the MSc program will be able to pursue careers in both private and public sectors, in organizations involved in the monitoring of the chemical and ecological quality of the environment, management and restoration of ecosystems, biotechnology and food companies, agrochemical, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical production companies, and companies developing new biotechnological products with applications in agriculture, environment, and food.
Today, a large percentage of MSc graduates are successfully employed in the private and public sectors, and the completion of their postgraduate studies has been a crucial element in finding employment or advancing in their workplace.
