Learning outcomes

The course is designed as a preparatory framework for familiarizing students with the most advanced laboratory and in silico approaches that form the basis of modern biotechnology and it aims to prepare the students for the successful implementation of their MSc thesis.

The course is organized in interactive seminars and exercises. Each tutorial provides the technical description of the method, its capabilities, limitations and applications in the environment and nutrition. Subsequently, the students are expected to design laboratory approaches on specific problems/topics and present them to their peers in a way that encourages interaction and discussion and values different laboratory and in silico approaches.

Outline of course content

  • Advanced cloning techniques in synthetic biology applications
  • CRISPR/Cas technology and its application in food and the environment
  • Heterologous expression, purification and crystallographic analysis of proteins
  • Construction of metagenomic libraries for environmental samples
  • Environmental Epidemiology: Analysis of Antibiotic Resistance in Environmental Samples by Shotgun Sequencing Methods
  • Innovative laboratory techniques to highlight the added value of foods
